Jahez Project Finalizes Site Selection through Focused Group Discussion and Field Visit in Ramtha

The Climate Action Network (CAN Jordan), in partnership with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and within the FCDO-funded Jahez Project, conducted a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) today in Ramtha Greater Municipality, with active participation from municipal representatives, official bodies, and the local community.

The session was opened by Eng. Doaa Aldeerbany, President of CAN Jordan and “Jahez” Project Manager, alongside Dr. Fadhel Al Zoubi, International Expert in Disaster Risk Management and CAN Consultant. They both stressed the importance of community participation in identifying priority areas exposed to climate change risks and ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of solutions through a participatory approach based on local knowledge.

The session utilized the outputs from previous workshops, field visits, consultative meetings with the community and stakeholders, and desktop reviews. During the FGD, priority areas were reviewed and evaluated based on a detailed set of criteria assessing climate change risks, their impact on various segments of the local community, economic and social dimensions, and the feasibility of implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and risk reduction measures.

Based on the results, the sites were filtered, and the route for a field visit to the identified hotspots was determined. Immediately following the session, all participants, along with the project team, executed direct field visits to inspect the proposed locations and discuss intervention opportunities with local residents.

Both the FGD and the field visits witnessed exceptional interaction and great interest from the attendees, who expressed their enthusiasm and readiness to participate in the upcoming phases of the project.

This activity is part of the “Jahez” project series aimed at enhancing local communities’ readiness to adapt to the impacts of climate change and determining the sites for implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS), supporting the Climate Refugee Nexus initiative launched by His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein during COP27.
